If you drive into South Shields from the A194, watch out for one junction from Monday. South Tyneside Council says a new enforcement camera at the existing bus gate on Dean Road, near the A194 junction, starts operating on 9 November 2026. The bus gate itself is not new. It stops general traffic heading north from the A194 roundabout onto Dean Road, so buses can turn in safely. The council says the camera simply enforces the rule that is already there and does not add a new restriction. (South Tyneside Council: Dean Road bus gate camera enforcement; checked 8 Nov 2026)

Drivers who go through the bus gate when they are not allowed to may get a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), so follow the signs as you approach the junction and let your sat nav pick another way onto Dean Road if it tries to send you through.
